Awarding the ETH Zurich Silver Medal for doctoral thesis projects
Exceptional doctoral theses can be awarded the ETH Zurich Silver Medal.
The long-term ceiling for the number of medals awarded should not exceed 8% of doctoral theses within ETH Zurich as a whole or within individual departments.
The exceptionality of the doctoral thesis and its eligibility for an award must be set out in writing in the following texts:
- examiner’s report
- co-examiner’s report(s)
- additional external expert assessment
After approval of the application by the department, the Head of Department must send the application for the Medal(s) to the Rector in a collective message by 30 April or 31 October at the latest.
Applications must be submitted using the form Download Application: ETH Medal for outstanding doctoral thesis projects (PDF, 413 KB). The applications must include the following documents:
- examiner’s report (photocopies)
- co-examiner’s report(s) (photocopies)
- additional external expert assessment (with original signature / co-examiners are not accepted as additional experts)
Spring semester applications to Doctoral Administration Office by 30 April at the latest

The long-term ceiling for the number of medals awarded should not exceed 8% of doctoral theses within ETH Zurich as a whole or within individual departments. Each department’s allowance is calculated after the first Study Conference of each spring semester.
Autumn semester applications by 31 October at the latest
