Artificial intelligence (AI) has become part of everyday working life for many employees – including at ETH Zurich. Whether for text generation, data analysis or research support, tools such as ChatGPT and Copilot offer a wide range of possibilities. At the same time, they place new demands on the secure and responsible handling of information. To support employees in this regard, the Cyber and Information Security (CISEC) department of IT Services has made two new documents available that provide guidance and contain specific recommendations for the use of AI.

Protecting sensitive data is the top priority
"AI can increase efficiency and help solve complex tasks – but only if we use it responsibly," emphasises Johannes Hadodo, Chief Information Security Officer at ETH. Protecting sensitive data is a top priority: "Confidential or personal information must not be entered into AI systems under any circumstances."
Critical examination of AI-generated content is also key. "AI does not deliver truths, but suggestions – these must always be questioned and verified," Hadodo continues.
Explanation of legal and ethical aspects
The guidelines also explain the legal framework, such as the Data Protection Act (DSG), and address ethical aspects that are essential for responsible research and teaching at ETH.
The new documents were initiated by Johannes Hadodo and Domenico Salvati, Head of Information Security Governance, in close collaboration with the departments' information security officers. In conclusion, Johannes Hadodo emphasises: "Use AI – but safely, responsibly and in line with ETH values."
