Finding a childcare place

The external page kihz foundation is the central support service of ETH Zurich. This is supplemented by the Kikri facility.

In the 8 kihz daycare centers of the kihz foundation, children from the age of four months up to the transition to kindergarten are lovingly cared for with around 270 full-day places, which are occupied by approximately 500 children. The daycare centers are located at the most important university sites: on the H?nggerberg campus, near the Irchel campus, the Zentrum campus, in Oerlikon and Dübendorf.

ETH provides financial support for childcare places at the kihz foundation and the Kikri facility. It pays both the infant supplement and the regular subsidies for families living outside the city of Zurich.

Conditions for obtaining a childcare place at the kihz foundation or at Kikri

  • The parents must be gainfully employed.
    • A recognised training scheme or unemployment within the limits of employability are deemed to be equivalent to gainful employment.
    • A regular voluntary work is deemed to be equivalent to gainful employment.
    • The child's linguistic integration is deemed to be an entitlement for a childcare place (regardless of the parents' level of employment).
  • The minimum time for a child to spend in childcare is two days (this can be split into half-day sessions at the kihz foundation. At Kikri, at least the five mornings must be booked.
  • The amount of childcare provided must be appropriately proportionate to the parents’ level of employment. The entitlement to care is calculated on the basis of the sum of both parents’ level of employment minus 100%.

Entitlement to care

Father 100%, mother 60% = total 160% (160% - 100% = 60%). There is an entitlement to 3 days of care

Example: no entitlement to care

Father 30%, mother 70% = total 100% (100% - 100% = 0). No entitlement to care

Registration process kihz foundation

Parents must complete the online application form for the kihz foundation. The foundation’s administration team receives the application and checks whether the conditions have been met. The data are recorded and the parents receive a confirmation of their application. The kihz foundation then searches for a childcare place. If a place is available, the parents are given a specific period of time in which to decide whether or not to take it.

Complementary family care is expensive in Switzerland compared to other countries. In Switzerland, an unsubsidized toddler place costs around CHF 130 per day, an infant place up to CHF 180. Subsidized places can be claimed depending on family income. In addition to childcare in daycare centers, there are alternative childcare options such as daycare families or nannies.

If parents are entitled to subsidies, they must submit an external page external application (German) to the Department of Education and Sport. The Department of Education and Sport calculates the definitive external external page contribution factor (German) which is valid for one year, on the basis of the available tax data (latest definitive tax bill) or on the basis of a tax simulation.

Parents receive the contribution factor by letter and forward it to the parent administration department of their daycare center. The daycare center signs the childcare contract and then issues the parents with a corresponding invoice for the childcare services received, which already takes the subsidies into account.

Do you have any questions about the scope of childcare eligible for subsidies in the city of Zurich?

You can find detailed information on the external page website (German) of the City of Zurich.
