Below you will find information about the one-year research stay at ETH Zurich as an FCS visiting student supported by the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships Program.
- FCS visiting student
- Enrolled by the Reception Service as FCS visiting students
- Note: Scholarship holders who carry out their one-year research visit at Eawag, Empa, PSI or WSL must also enrol as FCS visiting students at ETH Zurich and fulfil the conditions.
- Master's degree or equivalent qualification
- Note: If your scholarship application is successful, you must submit your final Master's transcripts / Master's degree to ETH by 30 June (non-negotiable) to ensure matriculation as an FCS visiting student by 1 September of the same academic year. Before applying for the scholarship, please clarify whether you can meet this deadline in view of the processes and deadlines at your home university.
- 1 September. Arrival on a different start date is not anticipated.
- If you arrive earlier or later than 1 September, inform the Reception Service. Any issued caused by an early or late start will be the responsibility of the grantee.
- Tuition fees are waived
CHF 1,920 monthly
- Subject to supervisor approval. The administrative process is done by Human Resources of ETH Zurich or the research institution. Final authorization must be obtained from FCS.
- Student teaching assistant (only option due to student status)
- During semester: max. 15 hours per week
- During semester breaks: full-time possible
- Not possible
- Scholarship limited to regular duration of 12 months
- Students at ETH Zurich: Guaranteed in one of the available student rooms
- Students at research institutions (Eawag, Empa, PSI, WSL): Not guaranteed, up to research institution
- Students already living in Switzerland: Not guaranteed
- Families: No accommodation for families, only for student
The immigration authorities of canton Zurich identify a sum of CHF 1750 per month as necessary. That sum does not include individual expenses for clothes, leisure, telephone, contingencies. (The cost of living in Basel are described in the fact sheet below.) Accommodation is usually the biggest cost item due to the high demand and very limited supply.
The costs of living depend strongly on personal lifestyle, so the following information is only a rough guideline.
- ETH does not award degrees for FCS visiting studies during the scholarship programme.
- Academic activities completed as an FCS visiting studies cannot be credited towards a degree programme at ETH Zurich, in case the scholarship holder stays at ETH to register for such a programme.
