Working with robots

Scientists at ETH Zurich are pioneering important research in the field of robotics. The results of their work went on show recently at the RobotX Innovation Day. (Image: Alessandro Della Bella / ETH Zurich) ETH spin-off Tethys Robotics has developed a compact underwater drone that can operate autonomously even in strong currents and murky waters. It can be deployed in locations too dangerous for professional divers. (Image: Tethys Robotics) An ETH-led team of researchers has created innovative flexible housing for drones. This not only protects the sensitive components within but also registers the point and force of any contact. Markings on the housing are monitored by camera to detect where and how hard the drone has been impacted. (Image: Alessandro Della Bella / ETH Zurich) Standing about 1.3 metres tall, weighing roughly 35 kilograms and equipped with over 40 movable joints, the Unitree G1 is an astonishingly agile humanoid robot. Now, ETH Zurich researchers are teaching the robot how humans act and behave by letting it observe people and learn from what it sees. (Image: Rahel Roth / ETH Zurich) AI is making inroads into the food packing industry thanks to ETH spin-off Witty Machines. The company makes a machine that can automatically sort, inspect and pack eggs, thus streamlining production lines and ensuring products can be traced to their source. (Image: Rahel Roth / ETH Zurich) Crash course for control systems: Researchers are searching for ways to ensure systems act quickly and safely when learning from data. Using a miniature test platform, they road-trial their ideas to fine-tune their algorithms one step at a time. (Image: Tamara Pinto / ETH Zurich) ETH Zurich’s student robotics team NomadZ is competing in the RoboCup Standard Platform League, where all teams use an identical platform, currently the NAO humanoid robot. The main aim of this research is to develop algorithms that enable robots to operate with complete autonomy. (Image: Alessandro Della Bella / ETH Zurich)
